Shawbost Stone Circle
..............................................................................................................
Most visitors to Lewis with an interest in stone circles come to see the amazing Callanish circle but there are quite a few outlying circles. Visitors to Dollag's Cottage will be pleased to know that one of the outlying circles is located in Shawbost and is only a short distance from the cottage. The Shawbost Stone Circle is located on the northern side of Loch Raoinebhat. If you decide to drive then simply drive up to the cross roads and turn right heading for Carloway. After less than a mile you will see a big loch sitting down to the right of the road and there will be a sign for a Norse Mill. There is good parking at the east end of the loch as indicated by the sign. Instead of heading out the path for the Norse Mill the visitor should follow the northern bank of the loch, that is the bank furtherest away from the road. The walking is easy, and is probably about half a mile, but as ever the moor is quite wet in places so sensible shoes are a requirement. It is necessary to follow the bank of the loch along for quite some distance, probably 2/3rds of the length of the loch, before the stone circle will be found but it is near to the loch on a little hill and after the big bay, or inlet, that you have to walk around. Not much is known about this circle as it has not been excavated and so the visitor will find it in its natural state with many of the stones fallen and some are half covered in peat. However, it is well worth the walk to get to see this stone circle and it gets very few visitors in a year so you will almost certainly have the circle to yourself. You can combine a visit to this circle with a visit to the Norse Mill. It would also be possible, and maybe even quicker, to get to this circle by walking from the cottage: turn right out onto the road and when you come to the road down to the shore instead of turning left for the shore turn right again and head out the track which goes around the back of Loch na Muilne. Then walk towards Loch Raoinebhat aiming to reach it at about the big bay on the northern shore. You can then follow the loch around to the circle. In all the walk to the circle should take less than half an hour.
