The Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris, which are joined together, are world famous for the beaches along their shoreline but the visitor to Dollag's Cottage need travel no further than a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach at Shawbost. The Shawbost beach is about 400 yards long and there is a picnic table at the South Shawbost end close to the cottage and while the beach is never crowded it is used by local children for swimming during the summer holidays. Within 5 minutes drive of the cottage are two other sandy beaches at Dalmore and Dalbeg and although neither are safe for swimming they are often used by the surfers who travel from throughout Europe to Lewis for their sport. Dalmore and Dalbeg can be spectacular when there is a storm rushing in from the Atlantic and it is often possible to predict the the arrival of the storm by watching the size of the breakers increase as the weather system approaches.
For the visitor wanting to travel further afield then the selection is almost endless and ranges from small hidden gems, a family sized area of sand located between rock and moor with the Atlantic reaching as far as the eye can see, to wonderful sandy beaches that are literally miles long. The most well known, and one of the most famous beaches in the world among those who know about such things, is the beach at Losgaintir on the west coast of Harris. Losgaintir is spectacular offering miles of white sand, a view of the hills of North Harris and clear blue Atlantic water that you can't resist dipping your toes into even on a cool autumn day. With its international reputation it is unlikely that you will have Losgaintir beach all to yourself, as will likely be the case on the other beaches, but the density of people is unlikely to exceed 2 or 3 per mile of sand so it never feels crowded.
